Simply Travel to quit AITOfollowing Thomson acquisition

The Association of Independent Tour Operators has confirmed Simply Travel will not be allowed to remain a member following Thomson’s acquisition of the company.

Chairman Paul Chandler said the operator would have to resign as it could no longer claim independence.

Some members at the meeting – which was held in secret – said AITO should mount a campaign against the march of the major companies.

Meanwhile, the new membership rules drawn up by the AITO council will be distributed for members to sign – with those who refuse to do so facing expulsion.

Under the new criteria, operators must not get financial backing from its owners, preferred deals from other suppliers or improved distribution. The company must also produce its own audited accounts.

“The new rules are being sent out for consultation but I don’t expect there to be a problem,” said Chandler. “If they are adopted, all members will have to sign them. They will have until next year to do so and if they haven’t signed by then, they will have to leave.”
