IT SEEMS strange that one of the reasons given for British Airways’ decision to cut commission is ‘to please the City’. While the City is hardly distinguished for its extensive knowledge of the travel industry, it is surely not so stupid to be impressed with a company that alienates 85% of its distribution network, particularly when that network has many competing airlines to whom it can readily turn.
The City should be made fully aware that one of the principal reasons for BA’s continuing poor performances results directly from the antipathy of travel agents as, unsurprisingly, its management seem reluctant to admit this vital fact.
