Eddington fuels BA rumours with decision to quit Ansett

ANSETT Australia executive chairman Rod Eddington is to leave the carrier next month, increasing speculation he is to join British Airways.

Eddington has been tipped to take over as BA chief executive following Bob Ayling’s departure last month.

Colleague Craig Wallace, the executive general manager for Ansett’s commercial planning, confirmed to Travel Weekly that Eddington is leaving the Australian carrier.

BAchairman Lord Marshall has confirmed he is in negotiations with three possible candidates to replace Ayling but would not comment on whether Eddington was one of them.

Aspokesman for BAsaid Lord Marshall had received many applications and had personally been working his way through them.

Eddington is also a director at News Limited, the Rupert Murdoch media company, and may be given an expanded role at the firm on leaving Ansett.

News Limited recently sold its stake in Ansett to Air New Zealand, leaving Eddington’s position unsteady.
