US road trips: 5 of the best RV routes

With motorhome rentals still booming, Laura French shares her pick of great trips in the States

1. Southern California

SoCal is what road-trip dreams are made of, and there’s no better way to see it than in an RV. Simply pitch up at the state’s national parks – from Yosemite to Death Valley, Kings Canyon to Sequoia – and enjoy world-class hikes in superlative surrounds.

Cruise America says its Southern California Highlights itinerary is its bestseller and it’s not hard to see why, combining as it does the state’s natural lures with the likes of Los Angeles, San Diego, Santa Barbara and Newport Beach on an 11-night adventure to remember. Premier Holidays sells the trip from £1,599, including campervan hire and flights from Heathrow to LA.

2. The Wild West

The spurting geysers, crashing waterfalls and free-roaming grizzlies of Yellowstone have garnered this national park worldwide acclaim, but it’s not the only draw of America’s legendary wild west.

For travellers wanting to take in the best of its Old West culture and sizzling landscapes, First Class Holidays has a 14-day Cowboy Country itinerary covering four states and attractions including Mount Rushmore, Yellowstone, Grand Teton National Park and Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. Prices start at £1,669 per person, based on four sharing a motorhome with flights from London and a night’s stay in Denver.

3. East Coast

Road trips aren’t only about the western US. From the country’s capital to North Carolina, Catoctin Mountain, Orlando and the Outer Banks – a 330-mile stretch of barrier island beaches where wild horses roam – there are plenty of attractions on the other side.

Travelpack has a 17-night itinerary taking in the highlights from Washington DC to Orlando, from £1,789 per person, based on two travelling on March 8, 2023, with flights from Heathrow and RV hire.

4. Deep South: Texas to Louisiana

Whether it’s through history, music, culture or food, the Deep South knows how to charm, and there’s no better way to experience its heritage-rich cities and sun-dappled coastlines than by road.

Gold Medal offers a 14-night trip crossing Texas and Louisiana with stops at Padre Island National Seashore, home to the rare Kemp’s ridley sea turtles; Abilene, home of the largest collection of storybook sculptures in the US; New Orleans and beyond. Prices start at £1,449 for a departure on May 4, 2023, including flights, a pre-night stay in Dallas and motorhome hire with Cruise America.

5. Minnesota

Midwestern Minnesota might not get the glory of its more-visited siblings, but that’s all part of the charm – and with 45,000 miles of shoreline, 66 state parks and 57 forests, the ‘Land of a 10,000 Lakes’ deserves a spot on any nature lover’s list.

American Affair’s 10-night Minnesota Wildlife and Wilderness Adventure explores the highlights, from Itasca, Minnesota’s oldest state park, to the historic town of Wabasha, set on the banks of the iconic Mississippi. Prices start at £2,438 for a departure on September 1, including flights and motorhome hire.
