Flights continue in face of Mount Etna eruption

An eruption of Mount Etna in Sicly has led to airspace restrictions being imposed.

Nearby Catania airport remains open but passengers have been advised to check the status of their flights.

Etna, Europe’s tallest volcano, started spewing smoke and lava on Wednesday.

Catania airport said: “As a result of volcanic activity occurred this morning, it has been ordered the closure of airspace sectors approximately of north and northeast from Etna, but no restrictions are expected at the moment in terms of the reduction of arrivals and departures.

“Passengers are requested to check the status of their flight with the airline before going to the airport.”

Flights to the airport serving Sicily’s second largest city were operating as normal this morning.
