Gatwick cancels 20 flights but operations ‘returning to normal’

Gatwick airport cancelled 20 flights in advance on Monday (December 30) as weekend disruption due to fog continued, but says its operations are now “returning to normal”.

A Gatwick spokesperson said: “Temporary air traffic restrictions in place over the weekend due to fog have been lifted.

“A small number of flights have been cancelled in advance to avoid last-minute cancellations, but operations are now returning to normal.

“London Gatwick apologises for any inconvenience.”

The four days of disruption at Gatwick came as the Met Office issued yellow weather warnings across most of the UK for New Year’s Day which could impact travellers.

These include warnings for snow in Northern Ireland and Scotland, wind across England and rain in large parts of Wales.

Yellow warnings will stay in place for some regions until January 2.

A spokesperson for Gatwick airport told Travel Weekly it was too early to predict if the weather warnings would impact travel later in the week.

A spokesperson for Manchester airport said: “We are aware of the weather forecasts suggesting potential for travel disruption across the UK and are closely monitoring them, and we are putting measures in place to ensure we are in a good place to mitigate any issues as they arise.”

A spokesperson for Belfast City Airport said there “may be some disruption to flights” due to adverse weather conditions predicted across the UK and Ireland for December 30 and December 31.

A spokesperson for Birmingham airport said the area appeared set to avoid “the brunt of the bad weather” with no cancellations currently planned.

They added: “Advice to passengers is to check with airlines the status of their flight and make sure adequate time is left to travel to the airport, especially if rail and road networks are impacted.”

Spokespeople for London Heathrow Airport and London Stansted airport said there were currently no plans to cancel any flights on those days.

Other airports have been contacted for comment.
