Icelandair’s Christmas advert ‘inspired by true story’

Icelandair has unveiled a new advert which it claims was “inspired by the true story of a young and determined Icelandic boy who grows up to become an equally determined Icelandair pilot”.

It shows the boy digging snow to get out of his house and then clearing the local ice rink so that he can use his new ice skates on Christmas Eve.

The story then shows him as an adult, who has become an Icelandair pilot, preparing for take-off from Schiphol airport, travelling home to Iceland.

However, flights across Europe have been cancelled due to bad weather conditions.

“Our pilot beats the odds and single-handedly digs the Icelandair aircraft out of the snow,” said the airline’s blog.

“This real-life event perfectly captures the relentless optimism of the Icelandic spirit which, as the story shows, goes much further than you could ever imagine.”

Gísli S. Brynjólfsson, Icelandair marketing director, said: “Icelandair is delighted to share this depiction of Icelandic spirit and bring it to the world.

“This heart-warming, real life story, festively captures the enthusiastic and optimistic nature of the Icelandic people – and of course their national carrier.”

The ad has been released as Icelandair announced a new seasonal service from its hub in Reykjavik to its newest North American gateway: Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina. The route is to operate four times a week from May 12, 2022, on Tuesday, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays on a 160-seat Boeing 737 MAX-8.
