New Zealand postpones border reopening due to Omicron risk

New Zealand as postponed a phased reopening to international travel from January until the end of February as part of plans to minimise the risk of the Omicron variant.

The move is being made to slow the rapid spread seen overseas, according to the New Zealand government.

The country had planned to allow full vaccinated New Zealanders to return home from January with foreign travellers from April 30, a date which currently appears to be unchanged.

The phased border re-opening will be reviewed at the end of February.

“There is no doubt this is disappointing and will upset many holiday plans, but it is important to set these changes out clearly today so they can have time to consider those plans,” a statement said.

“Covid-19 keeps throwing new curve balls and we have to respond in a way that continues to protect lives and livelihoods without putting in place restrictions and lockdowns unless absolutely necessary.

“Waiting till the end of February 2022 will increase New Zealand’s overall protection and slow Omicron’s eventual spread.”
