Updated: Scottish airports face strike action in pay dispute

Unite the union, which represents members in the Highlands and Islands Airport Limited (HIAL), has confirmed that strike action will hit the group’s airports later this month.

The union represents security staff, baggage handlers and ground crew as well as those working in fire and rescue, security and administration.

Workers rejected a 5% pay increase offer which the union said was “unacceptable with inflation soaring to 13.4% (RPI)”.

Dundee airport will be closed for flights on February 17 and February 20.

These airports will be closed for flights on February 21, February 22 and February 23: Barra, Benbecula, Stornoway, Sumburgh and Tiree.

However, these airports will be operating as normal from February 21-23: Campbeltown, Dundee, Inverness, Islay and Wick John O’Groats.

HIAL later confirmed updated operating arrangements for Kirkwall airport on the days affected by strike action.

It said: “Having explored further options, our colleagues at Kirkwall have confirmed that they will be able to operate on a limited basis, opening between 07.15 and 13.00 on Tuesday February 21, Wednesday February 22, and Thursday February 23 for inter-island flights only.

“We apologise in advance for the disruption to passengers intending to travel to and from Orkney on these dates as a result of the industrial action. Passengers booked travel on these dates should contact their airline for more information on flights.”

Sharon Graham, Unite general secretary, said: “Inflation is at a generational high yet the HIAL group believe a substantial real terms pay cut is what our hard-working members deserve. This is completely unacceptable.”

Shauna Wright, Unite industrial officer added: “Unite believes our hard-working members who keep the airports operating in isolated and rural communities across Scotland deserve far more than what is currently on the table.

“Unite is once again calling on the Scottish government to meet with us, the workers and HIAL management to fund an improved pay offer, and to deliver more investment in these communities.”

Inglis Lyon, HIAL’s managing director said: “We apologise in advance for the disruption this action by Unite colleagues will cause for our airlines and passengers.  I would urge anyone intending to travel on these dates to contact their airline.

“The enhanced offer we presented maximised the flexibility within the Scottish government’s pay policy. However, we remain in dialogue with Transport Scotland and the trade unions in an attempt to resolve the matter.”
