Travel firms among main contributors to monthly GDP growth

Travel and tourism firms including agents and operators were one of the main contributors to UK GDP growth in February, according to data from the Office of National Statistics.

GDP growth slowed to 0.1% in February from 0.8% in January, with drops in production and construction but a 0.2% rise in the services industry, including travel and tourism.

The sharpest growth was in travel agency, tour operator and other reservation services and activities, which grew 33.1% as restrictions eased and demand returned.

Meanwhile, accommodation saw 23% growth, according to figures released on Monday.

The ONS data showed that overall output in consumer-facing services grew by 0.7% in February 2022, following 2.0% growth in January, while non-consumer facing services remained level on the month.

Monthly GDP is now 1.5% above the level reported prior to the Covid-19 pandemic in February 2020.

The services industry is now 2.1% above its pre-coronavirus level; however, consumer-facing services remain 5.2% below pre-pandemic levels.
