Workers at two more firms call off Gatwick strike action

Strike action scheduled for the next two weekends at Gatwick by ASC workers has been called off, the union Unite has announced.

ASC staff voted in favour of a double-digit pay rise, meaning they will not now go ahead with strikes on July 28-August 1 or August 4-8.

Meanwhile, workers at Menzies have voted in favour of a 13% increase for ground-handling staff and a 17% increase for the lowest paid staff, as well as enhancements to annual leave and sick pay.

The planned strikes by Menzies workers on July 28-August 1 had already been suspended, and a second walkout had been set for August 4-8.

The votes in favour of the pay deals mean that both disputes have now ended, and all strike action related to them cancelled.

Earlier this week, strikes by Gatwick DHL workers were also called off after the workers voted to accept a 15% pay deal.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “These excellent results were achieved because Menzies and ASC workers at Gatwick are unionised and stood strong.

“Unite does what it says on the trade union tin: Defend and improve jobs, pay and conditions for our members.”

On Monday (July 24), Unite said that talks with a fourth company, GGS, were “progressing in a positive direction”.

Strike action by GGS workers scheduled for July 28-August 1 was suspended to allow these talks to continue, with a strike between August 4-8 still set to go ahead if a satisfactory outcome is not reached in time.

Unite said today: “Workers at GGS have begun balloting on an improved pay offer. A further announcement will be made in due course.”

Unite regional officer Dominic Rothwell said: “As these results demonstrate, workers looking to improve their wages and working lives should join Unite and get their colleagues to do the same.”
