Look to the skies to discover a new side of Norway’s beauty

The unbridled natural appeal of Norway’s coastline has to be seen to be believed – think magnificent fjords flanked by mountains and rugged islands cloaked in snow.

For more than 130 years, Hurtigruten has brought travellers up close and personal with some of Norway’s most breathtaking scenery, from fjords to forests, all the way along its beautiful coastline.

But turn your gaze to the sky while on board and there’s even more to marvel at, with constellations of stars brightening up the night sky and the northern lights dancing through the darkness.

The Coastal Express
Hurtigruten’s signature voyage, the Coastal Express, sails from Bergen in the south to Kirkenes in the Arctic Circle in the north, and back. Across 2,500 nautical miles, 34 ports of big cities and small fishing villages await. And as the ship leaves behind the land’s light pollution, guests will be able to enjoy the aurora borealis in all its beauty.

Astronomy voyages
For clients keen to uncover what’s hidden in Norway’s night sky, recommend one of Hurtigruten’s expert-led astronomy voyages.

For 12 days, they’ll sail the classic Coastal Express route in the company of an expert astronomer, who will offer fascinating insights. There’s the chance to gaze at the solar system and attend lectures to find out more about our universe.

The astronomer will also monitor weather and solar activity to give passengers the best chance of seeing the northern lights and will share top tips for capturing them on camera.

The Northern Lights promise

Aurora activity is at its highest between October and March, and being at sea offers an even better opportunity to catch a glimpse of the lights as the sky is typically clearer.

However, for passengers who don’t see the aurora on a voyage of 11 days or more, Hurtigruten’s Northern Lights Promise entitles them to a free six or seven-day Classic Voyage the following season (T&Cs apply).
