Kauai, Hawaii
In association with: Brand USA
Rainforest hikes, cascading waterfalls and idyllic surfing spots are all part of a trip to the US state of Hawaii
Road trips are done a little differently in Hawaii. Comprising eight major islands – six of which can be publicly visited – and dozens of islets, all lined by the glistening Pacific Ocean, Hawaii is a remote paradise just over a five-hour flight from the US West Coast. With Brand USA’s Island Discovery Series – Hawaiian Islands itinerary, your clients can embark on a spectacular island-hopping trip around the 50th US state.
Honolulu, on the island of Oahu, is a natural starting point to tick off some of the biggest attractions. Hike to the Diamond Head State Monument, a vast crater formed hundreds of thousands of years ago, just outside the city.
There’s also the famous Waikiki Beach, a great surfing spot for beginners, and the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbour, which remembers the lives lost in this attack in the Second World War. And for those keen to learn more about the islands’ rich Polynesian culture, the Polynesian Cultural Center hosts evening shows and luaus and visitors can learn all about the arts, crafts and traditions.
Kauai is a 15-minute flight away, with some of the most incredible landscapes across Hawaii. Koke’e State Park has several rainforest hikes, and Waipoo Falls – an 800ft waterfall is one of the most impressive spots. The crescent-shaped Poipu Beach, with its striking golden sands, is a great place to wind down afterwards.
Hawaii (The Big Island) is the next stop. This island is larger than the other seven major islands combined, so there’s lots to explore. But don’t miss visiting Kailua-Kona, where you can snorkel with turtles. Those looking for a more adventurous hike, head to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to see the world’s largest active volcano Mauna Loa.
Then, head to Maui, a particular favourite for those looking for watersports of all kinds. Black and red sand beaches are also found on this island thanks to its volcanic activity. Drive the Road to Hana, which runs along the north coast of the island, and stop at some of the secluded spots along the way, including waterfalls and hidden beaches.
The penultimate island, Lanai, has a diverse terrain incorporating nature reserves and rainforests, which is a real treat for hikers. End the trip in style in Molokai, an unspoilt paradise, where the rich Polynesian culture will stay with you long after you return.
