Tobago to develop wellness tourism sector

Tobago’s tourism bosses and businesses have started a project to develop wellness tourism on the Caribbean island.

The Tobago Tourism Agency’s ‘Roadmap for Growth 2020-2023’ said new niches must be explored in the post-Covid era and wellness tourism was identified as a “viable option”.

An online conference was held last week, called Exploring Wellness Tourism 360, to kickstart the initiative.

After the conference, there will be workshops for stakeholders on the island, followed by the development and launch of the wellness offerings.

Tourism secretary Ancil Dennis said: “Tobago has all the components necessary for wellness tourism: fresh air, beautiful scenery, natural green spaces, endless exciting physical activities.

“Covid-19 has allowed us a unique opportunity to reset. We in the Tobago House of Assembly remain committed to sustaining the environment and providing the necessary resources needed to ensure Tobago’s continued and improved attractiveness and competitiveness.”

The tourism board will develop a unique brand of wellness “that aligns with the destination’s brand position of providing ‘Beyond Ordinary’ experiences that go beyond the typical wellness offerings”.

Narendra Ramgulam, Tobago Tourism Agency’s product development and destination management director, said the conference can “kick-start our niche development efforts with a collaborative approach that embraces local and international stakeholder involvement”.

“This conference is about awakening our potential,” he said.

Tobago’s borders are re-opening to visitors on July 17, although the island is still on the UK red list of destinations.
