Broadway Travel refutes ‘name and shame’ minimum wage listing

Broadway Travel has said it was not responsible for paying staff below the minimum wage after it appeared on a “name and shame” government list.

More than 200 employers appeared on the list for failing to pay their lowest paid staff the minimum wage, after investigations by HMRC conducted between 2014 and 2019.

The list says Broadway Travel Service (Wimbledon) Limited, of Newcastle upon Tyne, failed to pay £4,200.89 to six workers.

However, chief operating officer Jill Mitchell told Travel Weekly the shortfall was related to Yourholiday.com, a travel agency that Broadway acquired in 2017.

Broadway recovered the outstanding money from the previous owner and the staff were paid what they were owed, she said.

Mitchell said the underpayment “happened before the acquisition,”adding: “We appealed to not be on the list but we could not be moved off.

“We did everything we could.”

The list from the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy, also included an entry for Yourholidays.com Ltd (under new ownership), Luton, saying it failed to pay £2,059.81 to two workers.
