Manchester Airport starts £60m transportation project

MANCHESTERAirport has started work on a £60m project to develop a public transport interchange serving its terminals.


By 2003, an expanded rail station will be opened, a new Metrolink line will be operational to the city centre and bus and coach facilities built.


The airport is spending £4m on preparatory work, including a £1m European grant, in order to pave the way for the new interchange.


Chief executive Geoff Muirhead said the initiative was expected to handle 6m passengers by 2005.


Currently, the airport has 1.7m passengers using public transport.


He added that the airport expected to handle 41m passengers by 2015 and double staff numbers.
