BAA considers stake in rival Schiphol

HEATHROW operator BAA is considering taking a stake in European rival Schiphol Airport.

The Dutch hub, home to KLM, is to start privatisation next month.

Schiphol’s director passenger airline marketing Leon Verhallen said indications from majority owners, the Dutch government, were that foreign investors could be allowed to bid for a share. He said: “BAA could take a stake.”

He was unsure how much of Schiphol would be sold off, although the airport is understood to want a total break from the government to ensure independence.

The government will announce next month how much of Schiphol will be sold with the sell off taking place next year. A spokeswoman for BAA declined to comment.
