Membership choose voting system
The question of directly electing the ABTApresident was considered during the consultation over the issue of ABTA’s structure last year.On balance, it was concluded that the democratic advantages of direct election were outweighed by the likelihood of the directors having better personal knowledge of the candidates’ respective abilities, bearing in mind the roles and functions carried out by the president.
In particular, the president not only represents the membership but he or she also chairs the board of directors, so it is important that the directors are happy to serve under the person elected and are confident of his or her abilities.
Ultimately, 96% of the membership voted in favour of the final proposals, where the majority of board members are directly elected but both the council of regions and board of directors are allowed to choose their own chairman.
