questions and answers

Below are some of the most frequently asked questions from potential clients who want to book a boating holiday in France. Answers have been compiled with help from specialist operators.

When is the best time to go?

The boating season runs from the end of May to the end of September. The best bargains are available in May but September is one of the most popular months in France due to the wine harvest.

How big are the barges?

They vary in size from two-berth to 12-berth or larger. For maximum comfort, operators recommend clients book a larger vessel than they need, ie an eight-berth for six people would be ideal.

UK-based companies such as the Barge Company, Blakes, Bridge Travel Service, Crown Blue Line, France Afloat and Hoseasons all have boating product. Prices vary according to the boat standard. Hoseasons prices start at £150 per person for a week’s hire in June, based on a 10-berth boat, excluding transport. Crown Blue Line charges from £90 per person per week. A four-berth, two-bath boat costs £1,315 in high season, including ferry crossings, with France Afloat. The Barge Company charges from £950 per person per week for a fully crewed charter, including all meals and excursions.

Are boats safe forchildren?

Yes, but they are not recommended for those under five years of age.
