l Full marks to the people at Crystal Holidays. We gave them a bit of stick a few weeks ago when Waterfall Travel was unable to book its holidays. Crystal promptly apologised to Waterfall and sent the retailer some gifts and vouchers for their clients who had lost the holiday. Now that’s the way to deal with a problem.* Is George Marcall about to return? The former Airtours director, who caused havoc in the industry by revealing a few years ago that the only thing thatmattered to holidaymakers was price, has left his job at Yates Brothers. He’s looking to get back to the “sharp end of business”.
* Stena Line has offered to exclusively charter its HSS fast ferry – the world’s largest high-speed ferry – to bring back England’s “triumphant” Euro 2000 soccer squad from Holland after the finals on July 2. “Triumphant” or not, I doubt the boys will take them up on the offer – have you tried having a drink on those things?
* Family Railcard is desperately trying to drum up business by hyping up the advantages of travelling by train instead of the car. According to its press release, 82% of people surveyed believe journeys by car are elongated because people have to stop at least once. There’s no such delay when you take the train. Except the trains that I travel on, which often seem to stop for long periods because the wrong type of snow, rain, etc has got on the line.
