BAA opens Heathrow extension

BAA has opened a £12.5m extension to Heathrow’s Terminal Three.

Work on the enhanced pier five took one year and will provide new boarding gates, additional aircraft stands and a departure lounge. The lounge can handle 1,600 passengers.

BAA said the new facility should cut down on boarding and arrival time as less aircraft will need to be parked on remote stands.

Some 2m customers are expected to use the new extension which is in a terminal mostly used by long-haul carriers.

The project was part of a £100m redevelopment of T3 designed to ease congestion at the overcrowded airport.

Meanwhile, BAA is investing £10m in transport initiatives at Gatwick. The money will cover bus services, dedicated bus lanes and staff schemes.
