British European slashes commission

BRITISH European has cut agents’ commission to 7% for domestic and international flights from the start of this month.

The airline was paying agents 9% on domestic flights and 7.5% for international departures but sales and marketing director Jonathan Breedon said it was no longer able to pay the higher commission.

“We held out as long as possible but we have got to ensure our distribution costs are in line with other airlines,” he said.

He added that, from today, British European is putting the passenger service charge back into the total ticket price in response to an Advertising Standards Authority ruling.

Breedon said this means agents will get paid commission on PSC. But he admitted that a new fare structure launched two weeks ago, offering prices from £28 one-way across the airline’s network, means many agents will now be worse off.
