Thomas Cook proves changes can help to lift team morale

With regards to the letter about moving from motivation to subordination in just one year (Travel Weekly June 26), I felt I had to respond.

The writer of this letter obviously feels working for Thomas Cook has changed too much. The picture they painted of Thomas Cook today reminded me of the Charles Dickens novel A Christmas Carol with Ebenezer Scrooge running the company. Thomas Cook has changed over the past year but I would personally not want to work for a company that sat with its head in the sand and didn’t move with the times.

When I joined the company five years ago, I was surprised at the attitude of people there -Êthey believed that having Thomas Cook above the door was good enough to make the sale. Since then I have seen so many changes for the better. Staff now believe that the name may bring customers in but it is their ability that makes the sale. We, as managers, all agree clear targets at the beginning of each year with head office.

I was confused to read that the manager who wrote in was not responsible for their own window cards and feel I may be speaking for every manager in the country when I ask how we can get out of writing them.

My regional sales manager demands results because that is his job. If I am doing well, he praises me and if I under perform, he pushes me with guidance if necessary.

I honestly believe Thomas Cook is the best employer I have worked for. How many big companies do you know where the managing director offers his direct phone number for any staff member who feels unable to speak to their line manager?
