Recent survey said 87% of staff are motivated

I am writing in response to the letter from a Thomas Cook manager about moving from motivation to subordination in just one year (Travel Weekly June 26).

The views and feelings of our staff are important to me and my team and we seek their views on a regular basis.

There is no doubt that things have changed over the past 18 months, as Thomas Cook has adapted to meet the needs of an ever-changing market. While change has brought its pressures, I am pleased to say that, in a recent staff survey, 87% of employees said they felt motivated to be working for a forward-thinking company. Also, 73% of staff and managers said they felt as valued now as they did a year ago.

Although this would seem to contradict the sentiments expressed in this manager’s letter, it still concerns me.

I will be encouraging feedback from staff to see whether the points raised are areas of common concern.

If the manager who penned this letter would care to call me directly, I would be happy to talk things through.

I have received phone calls and letters of support from managers over the past few weeks, reassuring me they are behind us all the way.

We are the most successful retail business in the whole of the travel industry and are well on the way this year to deliver the best results in Thomas Cook’s history. That is due to the commitment and dedication of my team in the shops and in our call centres.

So keep up the good work. If you have any concerns, pick up the phone and call me. My door really is always open.
