Thailand inbid to host ABTA2002convention
THE TOURISM Authority of Thailand is making an ambitious attempt to host the ABTAconvention in 2002.TAT marketing manager Chris Lee has scheduled a meeting with the association next Monday to talk about having the event in the beach resort of Pattaya.
“What we want is for agents to focus on the holiday experience that Thailand has to offer,” said Lee. “We would really like input into the actual conference.”
But Lee’s bid is unlikely to succeed. ABTA members have expressed a preference for short haul destinations after travelling to Australia last year.
Conference organiser Keith Betton said:”We have not received any notification from Thailand although we would be happy to discuss it.
“However, we are likely to choose a short-haul destination for practical reasons.”
Israel, Egypt and Hungary are the favourites for 2002. Next year the event is in Lisbon and in 2003 it will be in Majorca as the conference is held in Spain every 10 years.
n Advantage will hold its 2001 conference in Spain or France in April.
