TAT camera action keeps agents in the spotlight

Travel agents have taken their fair share of stick – and rightly so – in recent months for promising to turn up to industry events and then failing to show.

But on behalf of agents, I would also like to ask operators and tourist offices to make their fam trips and evening events fun and useful. There are still people who think that a good fam trip is to force agents to look at the inside of 156 hotels.

If they think that will make agents want to sell the place, then think again.

Anyone planning a trip should take some tips from the Tourist Authority of Thailand.

It was the first tourist board to film agents on an educational and then use the video to train other agents about the destination (Travel Weekly June 26).

OK, some big head called Jeremy Skidmore does the presenting. But that’s not the point. You could have had a monkey presenting the video (some say it would have done a better job) and it would still have been more interesting than most destination videos. TAT also lets agents have free time to discover the destination for themselves.

Anyone planning boring events, please take note.

Revealing: the TAT’s video of an agents’ fam trip to Thailand was fun and entertaining
