New passport scheme sees rise in pets going on holiday

Eurotunnel has carried over 400 cats and dogs to and from mainland Europe since the launch of the Pet Travel Scheme onFebruary 28.

The figure represents 75 % of the animals carried under the long-year scheme run by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.

Eurotunnel reports that the majority of pets have beenrepatriated.

However a growing number of pets are actually travelling on holidays to mainland Europe with their owners.

The operator is now taking around 20-30 pets a day and is expecting that number to increase significantly over the summer months.

A return pet ticket costs £30 and it can be booked through the Eurotunnel Call Centre. Tel: 08705 353535.
