British Midland applies to CAA for Japan and India go-ahead

BRITISH Midland has applied to the Civil Aviation Authority to launch flights to India and Japan.

No target date has been set for operations to begin, although if the carrier is unable to start transatlantic flights next summer, it has pledged to look at alternative long-haul routes.

Chairman Sir Michael Bishop has said he will use deliveries of Airbus A330s next year to serve Asia, Africa or Latin America if the carrier continues to be barred from the US.

British Midland has applied to serve Osaka, Tokyo, Delhi and Mumbai. It already has requests before the CAA to launch flights from Heathrow to Canada, the Middle East, Mexico, Kenya and Pakistan, and from Manchester to Johannesburg.

Sir Michael said he is hopeful a decision on allowing British Midland to start flights from Heathrow to US cities including Chicago, Seattle, New York and Miami will be made by the end of this month.
