ABTA to raise consumer awareness of service fees

ABTAis to raise awareness of service fees with the launch of a public campaign at the end of the year.

Chief executive Ian Reynolds said a proposal will be put to the ABTA board to use money from the association’s marketing fund for the initiative. “We will probably integrate the service fee campaign into a general campaign about ABTA,” he said.

ABTAmembers were worried that nothing was being done to prepare the public for British Airways’ plan to axe commission in January.

ABTA Greater London region chairman John Dellaway said: “Members do not want ABTA to wait until next year, they want something done now.”

Some 23% of ABTA agents already implement service fees to cover the costs of issuing tickets for low or non-commissionable items.
