Avis expands fleet of Smart vehicles

Report by DIANE SMITH

AVIS is expanding its range of Smart cars following research into the European short-break market that showed an increase in sales.

The study, commissioned by Avis Europe, claims the combination of a cash-rich time-poor generation and low-cost air travel has led to a 76% rise in short-break travel across Europe.

The survey revealed that 51% of travellers rate independence as a key priority; 49% want to see as many attractions as possible; and 24% are looking for flexibility first.

Figures showed that 34% of people would be most likely to hire a car as the top method for getting around a European city.

Avis Europe head of marketing strategy, Eric Ledroux said: “Growth in short breaks has prompted us to increase the range of cars to cater for all types of traveller.”

The Avis short-break study also found Paris was the most popular destination for a weekend break with 25% of those questioned opting for the French capital, followed by 23% opting for Rome and 20% for Barcelona.

Hertz Europe’s head of leisure sales, UK, Ireland, Scandinavia and Belux Sheelagh Collins agreed that the findings were indicative of the market in general with people becoming more independent.

Collins added that in her experience fewer people hire a car on a city break.

Car hire is more popular on visits to areas off-the-beaten track like to the Champagne regions.

“We are seeing what else we can offer them.”
