Discount war heats up for 2001 market

GOING Places has increased its lead discount to 30% on Airtours and Aspro holidays in a bid to kick-start the sluggish 2001 market.

Thomas Cook responded by hiking its own headline discount from 20% to 30% on selected JMC, Thomson and Airtours products.

The increases come in spite of appeals from senior industry figures to halt the discount war.

Lunn Poly was expected to follow suit over the weekend on selected Thomson products.

Travel Choice said it would resist a similar move unless it began to fall behind rivals.

Commercial director Philip Ordever said: “We won’t automatically follow. We will monitor the situation for seven days before deciding whether to raise our 20% offer.”
