Dedicated Internet sites put retailers in the driving seat
MORE Web sites are being created for agents who want to use the Internet to look for information and make bookings. Many companies from all sectors of the travel industry have set up dedicated pages within their Web sites which agents can access using a password. These dedicated sites are packed with more information than viewdata, they can be accessed more quickly, and they have pictures. If agents make a booking, they are credited with commission.
Global distribution-type systems on the net are also being created, where retailers pay a low-cost subscription to log on and book airlines, car hire and hotels.
Retailers will have fast access to a large bank of information polled from the traditional GDSs. They can then use their travel skills on people who are reluctant to book more than a simple flight from A to B on-line.
However the Web is still struggling to sell package holidays. Clients have to phone a call centre to make a booking or send an e-mail. But operators say clients and agents will be able to book full packages on-line shortly.
Go live: if agents make bookings over the Web, they still receive the commission
