n center parcs talksScottish and Newcastle was in talks with potential buyers for its Center Parcs and Pontin’s subsidiaries as Travel Weekly went to press. A subsidiary of Deutsche Bank and French holiday village firm Pierre et Vacances had expressed interest in Center Parcs, while talks are also underway with Manor Parcs over the sale of Pontin’s.
n job losses at sabre
Sabre is to axe 1,200 jobs across its global workforce in a bid to save £68 million a year. An undisclosed number of the 310-strong UKworkforce in Hounslow will be affected. Sabre has also announced the £515 million acquisition of US-based on-line company GetThere. It will be combined with Sabre’s Business Travel Solutions unit to create an on-line marketplace for travel suppliers and corporations.
n future of concorde
British Airways remains undecided over the future of Concorde as it waits for a report from French air accident investigators. The 80-page report, revealing details of the Air France crash in July, was due to be published as Travel Weekly went to press.
n Airport lounge delay
Heathrow has postponed the opening of The Island, the airport’s first pay-to-enter lounge for passengers with economy tickets. The Island was due to open on September 11 (Travel Weekly August 28) but construction work will not be complete. It will now open in mid-October.
n malmaison sale
Hotel group Malmaison has been sold by Wyndham International for £65 million. The group has been bought by Marylebone Warwick Balfour.
