Charter carrier African Safari Airways has applied for summer slots at Gatwick Airport for flights to Mombasa in Kenya. The Kenya-based airline currently serves German and Italian destinations with charter services. Meanwhile, other African carriers such as Bellview Airlines of Nigeria and African Star of South Africa look unlikely to start Gatwick flights this winter. Bellview has failed to secure slots at Gatwick for Lagos flights and African Star has yet to launch Johannesburg services despite having gained permission for athrice-weekly operation.

Avis Europe plc has acquired the remaining 66.7% of its joint venture, International Car Rental in Holland, in a $5.9m cash deal. Avis previously held one-third of ICR and acquired the othertwo-thirds from Dutch conglomerate, Hagemeyer, through Automotive Group ARM – Stokvis BV. The Dutch company has a 2000-strong fleet and annual revenues of £14.8m.
n Royal caribbean adds new africa itineraries
Royal Caribbean International has introduced new itineraries in Africa and included more ports of call for its Legend of the Seas’ Royal Journeys II cruises in 2000/2001. The itineraries are being expanded from 10 to 12 and the ship will sail to 14 countries and more than 30 cities in 172 days. Programmes featurefour-night safari adventures in Kenya, Tsavo and Amboseli game parks visits and conclude in Nairobi. Longer safaris are available in its new programme along with overnights in Israel, Egypt, India, Australia and New Zealand.
