Simply Travel flags realism in recruitment
Honesty pays off when recruiting and is the key to staff retention according to Karen Brindley, overseas recruitment executive at tour operator Simply Travel.
Brindley said that many potential employees are attracted to the travel sector because it sounds glamourous but do not stay on because their expectations are too high.
She said: “We are always very honest with candidates and we never oversell what we are offering. Obviously you focus on the plus points but you give people a realistic idea of the job.”
Simply Travel, which employs around 115 people in the UK and a similar number abroad, believes that engendering a friendly, open atmosphere is the best way to encourage people to stay.
“Money is important but if two jobs offer similar money people are going to go to where they would be happier,” she said.
Brindley acknowledges that there is always going to be some degree of job turnover, particularly on the sales side, as this is seen as a route to marketing or management. However, she said firms should maximise their chances to promote employees internally.
