LTB demands bedding listing
LONDONTourist Board and Convention Bureau president Sir John Egan has called for statutory registration of London’s hotels.
Launching its annual report and accounts for 1999/2000, Egan said that while a third of the 10,800 new hotel bedrooms added since 1995 were at the previously scarce budget end of the market, quality remained an issue.
He said: “Without statutory registration of hotels in London, quality remains variable and the current strength of the pound is exacerbating the perception of poor value for money in the middle to lower end of the market.
“Visitor numbers to London have seen steady growth over the last five years. It is important that hotel development matches this and that there is a good range on offer for visitors on any budget.”
In 1995 the total number of hotel beds in London stood at 150,000. The LTB wants the total to reach 170,000 by 2005.
