Domestic service prepares for greater island coverage
AIR Jamaica Express, Air Jamaica’s domestic service within the region, is looking to fly to Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Turks and Caicos and Cuba before the end of the year.
Air Jamaica general manager Europe Tony Cowles said: “If you look at routes offered between Montego Bay and Haiti, there is absolutely nothing available. People simply cannot get between the two islands without having to go to Miami.”
Cowles added: “It takes around 40 minutes to get to Haiti but via Miami you are looking at around one and a half hours.”
Montego Bay to Cuba is already offered by Air Jamaica Express on a charter basis serving the south of the island. However the airline will look to serve the south of the island with a scheduled service.
Air Jamaica Express links Montego Bay with Negril, Ocho Rios, Port Antonio and Tinson Pen, a small airfield near Kingston.
The route is operated by four aircraft, a 19-seat Dornier 228 and 202, an 11-seat Britten Norman Islander aircraft and a 33-seat Shorts SD3-60 aircraft.
