Pakistani project wins sustainable tourism award

Report by Louise Longman

THIS year’s top prize in the British Airways Tourism for
Tomorrow awards has been given to a restoration programme in Pakistan.

The Karimabad and Baltit Project, a 700-year-old fort and
village, which has undergone a £1 million restoration programme, now attracts
20,000 visitors a year.

A special UK award was given to Strattons Hotel in Swaffham,
Norfolk, which uses products from environmentally-friendly companies,
thermostatic heaters and energy efficient light bulbs.

The panel of judges was chaired by professor David Bellamy.

BA chairman Lord Marshall said: “The sustainable tourism
awards have been up and running for 11 years now and BA has been very proud to
act as a sponsor and organiser. The awards are now firmly established as the
global showcase for sustainable tourism development.”
