WORLD Travel Market, together with Green Globe, the worldwide environmental management and awareness programme for the travel and tourism industry, will confront many of the environmental issues facing the trade on Environmental Awareness Day, Wednesday November 15.
Broadcaster, travel and environmental journalist John Craven will chair a debate on the Central Feature area called The green dilemma: preservation or profit? The panel includes Geoffrey Lipman, Green Globe executive chairman; Hugh Somerville, head of the Sustainable Business Unit at British Airways; Samantha Smith, assistant director and policy officer for the World Wildlife Fund Arctic programme; and Ana Cristina Gozalo, Spanish Tourist Office UK deputy director.
Before the debate, John Craven and exhibition director Fiona Jeffery will present the Environmental Company Awards sponsored by WTM’s Global Media Network.
In the afternoon there will be two Green Globe educational seminars called How to Increase Your Marketing Advantage and How to Drastically Cut Cost. Presenters come from the Orchid Hotel, Mumbai; Avis Europe; the Cumbrian Tourist Office; La Cabana All Suite Beach Resorts, Aruba; Hagler Bailley environmental consultants; and Marriott Manchester Hotel.
To recognise exhibitors that have made a sustained effort to improve their environmental practice, WTM is awarding Green Ticks, which will be shown on the stands and in the exhibition catalogue. With over a month to go before WTM, a record number of Green Ticks have been awarded.
Environmental Awareness Day will also include the Tour Operators’ Initiative for Sustainable Development, which aims to create a platform to develop sustainable tourism projects.
