Hungary to spend £62m on tourism
THE Hungarian government is investing a record £62 million in its tourism product next year.
This has been followed with a promise to increase the nation’s tourism development budget to £72 million in 2002.
Under the Szechenyi Plan – named after the famous 19th-century Hungarian count – the country’s spa facilities will be enhanced and tourism developed at Lake Tisza.
Known as the Balaton of the Great Plain, Lake Tisza was created by the damming of the River Tisza 20 years ago. It is now popular in summer with the Dutch and German family holiday markets.
Hungarian National Tourist Office UK director Gabor Tarr said: “The Szechenyi Plan is a comprehensive plan that will encourage tourism outside Budapest.”
In Budapest, investment is centred on the construction of the 5,000-capacity Millennium Conference Centre, due to open on the Pest bank of the Danube in May 2002.
ABTA will decide next summer whether to return to the Hungarian capital for its 2002 convention. The choice of venue would rest between the Millennium Conference Centre and the 1,800-seat Budapest Conference Centre.
