Destination sees annual visitor numbers hit record high
NEW Zealand continues to enjoy good visitor increases as it turns in its best winter season – the Northern Hemisphere’s summer period – on record.
This is reflected in the latest annual statistics to July which show total arrivals reaching the 1.7 million mark for the first time – up 11% on the previous 12 months.
The UK market increased 12.9% to 183,478 for the year, with strong growth patterns from March to August – New Zealand’s traditional off-peak months.
Tourism New Zealand chief executive George Hickton attributed the healthy figures to continued aggressive fare strategies from airlines, the effect of the 100% Pure NZ campaign and increased product in tour operators’ programmes.
He added: “We seem to have become a trendy destination for holidaymakers from the northern hemisphere, who are beginning to realise that New Zealand is an ideal destination whatever the season.”
Alongside increased numbers, the country is also enjoying greater spend per visitor. For the year to the end of June, the average visitor spend was around £900 – a rise of 11%. Boosted by the strong value of the pound against the New Zealand dollar, UK spending was up 9%.
