THE Channel Tunnel has become the second most popular gateway to and from the UK after Heathrow, according to the Office for National Statistics.
Its latest Travel Trends survey, based on 263,000 interviews in 1998, shows that the tunnel accounts for 12% of all travel in and out of the UK, compared to 51% at Heathrow. Eurotunnel Shuttle Services managing director Bill Dix said:”Last year 20m people travelled through the tunnel, which has become an essential part of European infrastructure.”
