Retailer out of pocket after software scam

MANCHESTER travel agency and tour operator Bridgewater Travel has lost £1,000 after paying in advance for a computer and software that were never delivered.

The company ordered equipment from Digital Technology Systems of Selhurst Road in London in May 1999.

Bridgewater eventually obtained a judgement against the company at Salford County Court for £1,000. But the supplier now cannot be found.

Bridgewater managing director Barry Pearson said: “It’s hard trying to make a profit in this game as it is without people taking your money.”

He called on agents who had dealt with Digital Technology Systems to contact him.

Mike Cogan, partner at travel technology consultancy Equinus, said agents should beware of paying up front and of buying anything that was cheaper than the going rate.

He advised companies to look at Equinus’ Web site at equinus.com, which has a list of travel technology suppliers and their details. Cogan said that he could not offer any guarantees of the listed companies but they were all established players.

Digital Technology Systems was unavailable for comment.

n Bridgewater Travel can be contacted on 0161-703 3003.
