Region doubles stand size to reflect growing popularity
NEW self-drive fam trips, the latest trade and consumer guides, and Web site developments will be on show by six-state marketing consortium Discover New England next week.
The US Northeast region’s stand will be double the size of last year’s, reflecting the growing popularity of the area and the demand for new product.
DNE managing director Jackie Ennis will support key representatives from Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.
While Discover New England will have a strong presence at Pow Wow 2001 in Orlando, it will also stage its sixth annual tourism summit for operators between June 4-6 in Maine. The event is designed to showcase new product and suppliers. The consortium is also continuing its strong retail training presence in the UK, with more joint ventures planned with key tour operators. A new initiative to generate destination knowledge involves self-drive fam trips.
Anyone for breakfast? visitors are invited for coffee and muffins every morning between 10am and 11am at the New England stand to learn about the latest developments. On Monday between 3pm-5pm DNE will host a general reception at its stand. Pictured are Fiona Ward , left, and Sue Ockwell from Discover New England

NEWS FLASH
* The Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism is keeping under wraps “a major new product” to be unveiled at World Travel Market. This development will figure prominently in the state’s UK sales mission in February, when Massachusetts looks to expand into niche products including golf, fishing, music and the historical attractions of its colonial and revolutionary periods.
* Vermont is looking to capture a greater share of the niche market to New England in spring and summer with emphasis on fishing and golf as well as dining out. The approach will complement the state’s winter sports season during November-April. Vermont’s Web site for the UK market atwww.vermont-uk.com will also be updated to include hot links to all tour operators working with the state.
* New England’s other top ski destination, Maine, is concentrating on boosting more seasonal business by highlighting new touring routes in summer and autumn. Each route has been awarded National Scenic Byway status which limits development. Maine’s Office of Tourism is promoting these as the basis for new flydrive itineraries.
