Region set to revive European markets
NEW Mexico is another state that has regenerated itself after early summer forest fires affected tourism near the Santa Fe National Forest and the Los Alamos area in the northern central region.
New Mexico Tourism has allocated more funds to revive European markets, including the UK, and international sales manager Sharon Maloof will be at World Travel Market to push its ski destinations, summer outdoor activity products and Native American attractions.
Although no specific amount for the UK has been revealed, its annual tourism promotion budget has been tripled to over $4 million.
Maloof is joined at Earl’s Court by representatives from Indian Pueblos, Billy the Kid Country, Indian Country, and the Visitors and Convention Bureaux of Albuquerque and Santa Fe. The state has been targeting two themes for this year – Discover Route 66 in its 75th anniversary year and the state-run campaign called New Mexico is Hot, Hot, Hot! – and Maloof wants to reinforce these promotional messages for the coming year.
Maloof is also hoping to raise operator interest in developing New Mexico flydrives as air access from the UK was boosted this year with the start of Virgin Atlantic’s twice-weekly Gatwick-Las Vegas flights.
These are in addition to British Airways’ daily service from Gatwick to Phoenix that continues on to San Diego. However, BA is to introduce separate non-stop flights to the Arizona and California cities.
