SeaFrance warns UK motorists about thefts

Report by Kirsten Bowling

SEAFRANCE has launched a leaflet warning passengers to be extra vigilant
in Calais after a spate of car thefts and break-ins.

The leaflet, issued to motorists at the ferry terminal at Dover, advises
tourists not to leave any belongings in view in the car and to park in town
centre car parks, rather than deserted back streets.

The suggestions were put together after the Foreign and Commonwealth
office warned that visitors to the Calais area should be aware that there have
been a number of recent incidents of cars being stolen after their British
drivers had been tricked into stopping by thieves who either obstructed the
road or distracted the driver.

A Dover Harbour Board
spokesman said: “The main advice would be to keep possessions out of view,
but we should not be alarmist because this sort of thing happens everywhere.
Obviously people should just be sensible.”
