“They are popular with agents on management fees which have clients on a budget. Many companies are under pressure to save money or are located near to Stansted.”

Carlson Wagonlit, Hogg Robinson BTI and American Express are among Go’s clients. Newsom said independent business travel agents which charge booking fees had also been using Go. She claimed that in addition to cheap fares, Go could offer business passengers punctuality and reliability.

“We have very few cancellations. We have also introduced a separate hand-luggage check-in at Stansted which is particularly appealing for business travellers.”

Go is to continue expanding despite making a pre-tax loss of £19.95m in the 17 months to March 31. The airline is boosting frequencies from Stansted this winter and is also studying options for a second European base.

Go launched daily services to Barcelona and Prague on September 23 and the Spanish flights will go double daily on November 1.

The business fares range from fully flexible to two-night stopovers (see box). Newsom said even the most expensive fares were 50% cheaper than the equivalent scheduled fare and added they were proving popular with the travel trade as well as major corporates.
