* Founding member of airline group Star Alliance which boasts 15 members comprising 13 airlines.
* Part of the OnLine Travel Portal, the pan-European portal which, when it goes live in July, will offer European flights. Other OTP backers include British Airways, Aer Lingus, Air France, Alitalia, Austrian Airlines, Finnair, Iberia and KLM.
* Carried 47 million passengers last year.
* 34 flights a day from Heathrow, 15 flights from Stansted and 12 a day from London City Airport.
* Main hub is Frankfurt, with Munich beingexpanded as second hub.
* The original “Luft Hansa” – literally translated as “air” and the name of four Hanseatic merchant towns – was founded in Berlin in the 1920s, with the city regarded as the airline’s traditional base. Lufthansa began in 1953. It was not allowed to fly to Berlin when the country wasdivided. Scheduled services to Berlin resumed on October 28 1990.
