Sabre to focus on client relations after EDS deal
GLOBAL distribution system supplier Sabre has pledged to focus on developing new technology for agents to improve client relations following its deal with Electronic Data Systems.
The decision comes as Sabre hands over its outsourcing business to EDS for £465 million and signs a 10-year £1.53 billion service contract with the company to manage its network.
The deal will give Sabre time to invest in its core business of travel technology, innovation and marketing. This will include upgrading its existing Internet tool Virtually There, which allows agents to e-mail clients an itinerary of their trip by customising it to the individual.
Sabre is also developing more browser-based software and turning its helpdesks into electronic services so clients can go on-line for information rather than ring the call centre.
Sabre senior vice-president for Europe, Middle East and Africa Chris Kroeger said: “This partnership with EDS allows us to focus even more on delivering innovations to our travel agent customers.
“Before Sabre’s work was spread across several business units but now we can put more money into our travel business and marketing. We are specifically focusing on customer relationship management.”
Although most of the proceeds of the deal will be used to pay off debts incurred last year, some will be used along with existing funds to develop the new technology. Sabre already spends $10 million a year on new product development.
