Company looks to woo gay and lesbian market
THOMAS Cook is in talks with several operators as the multiple looks to move
into the gay and lesbian market.
Staff are also being specially trained to enhance their knowledge of the
product and are learning how to deal with gay and lesbian customers without
embarrassment.
The operator is planning to recruit a project manager to develop the
concept.
Thomas Cook commercial director Mike Beaumont said: “We believe there
is a market of about two million gay and lesbian holidaymakers yet we are
currently neglecting this segment of society.
“About 120,000 packages are bought each year but these are largely
direct sales. We are convinced there is enormous potential.
“It is not just the traditional gay and lesbian destinations they want
to go to,” he said. “They are also looking for destinations that are
common to everyone.”
Beaumont added that negotiations are under way with about five or six
operators.
The gay scene in Manchester will be targeted first.
As part of their induction, all new employees joining the company will
automatically be trained in how to deal with gay and lesbian customers.
